Big news today! The FCC has just Announced The Passing Of A Law that considers AI calls as robocalls meaning they have to follow all the same rules as robocalls from now on. So, what does this mean for your business and the AI calling/conversational voice AI industry?
Implications:
The new law has two main implications:
Implication 1: You can’t call people with AI unless they’ve permitted you.
Implication 2: You can’t imitate someone’s voice without their consent.
A lot of headlines are saying that “AI calling is now illegal,” but that’s an exaggeration. Not all AI calling is banned, but it’s important to understand the impact of this law.
Why did the FCC do the right thing?
This law was necessary, and it’s great that the FCC acted quickly to make it happen. It’s a major win for Americans, businesses, and the industry for two big reasons:
Stop unwanted AI calls: Nobody wants their phone constantly bombarded with annoying
AI calls, and this law puts a stop to that. It’s also good for businesses because it helps build trust with customers and prospects when using AI calls.
Preventing voice scams: This law also puts a halt to people using AI to impersonate others for shady reasons. This is a big step in the right direction to make sure AI technology is used ethically.
How does this affect you? What do you need to know?
If you’re using AI to call for your business or think about it, you might be wondering how this law affects you. Here’s the deal: At Precall, we’ve been prepared for this law for a while, so it doesn’t change anything for us or our users. Here’s why:
- Outbound call: We already require that you have permission to call the leads using AI.
- Inbound calling: If people call you, that’s considered consent, so this law doesn’t change anything for inbound calls.
- Voice cloning: We don’t approve of voice cloning on our platform, and if we ever do we’ll be sure it’s done ethically and with full consent.
If you’re previously using Precall, you’re good to go! This law doesn’t affect how you’re using the platform.
How does this affect you? (If you are new to Precall AI or are using an alternative platform)
If you’re new to AI calling or using various platforms, there are a few things you need to do to make sure you’re following the new regulations for outbound calling:
Introduction to your business: When making outbound calls, your agent needs to state your business name and the reason for the call in the introduction.
Not-so-good intro:
“Hey, {Name}?”
“Yeah, I was just calling about your request for more information on selling your house.
When did you want to sell it?”
Improved intro:
“Hi, {Name}?”
“This is Jack with Sunshine Realty, and I’m reaching out to you regarding your inquiry for more information on selling your house. When are you looking to put it on the market?”
This updated introduction includes the name of the company right from the start, which helps ensure compliance with the new regulations.
Provide business details: Your agent must be able to provide your legal business name, address, and a callback number when asked.
Get consent: If you’re running outbound campaigns, you need to have the consent of the leads you’re calling.
